Hardscaping and landscaping on Daniel Island.
Daniel Island is in the City of Charleston, with its own zoning text and its own Architectural Review Board on top. The board reviews a fence, a driveway, a landscape change or a tree coming down before the work starts, and it goes by three different guideline books depending on where on the island you live. Two of those books are dated 2010 and 2012, and all three carry a 2026 notice that they are being amended, so we check the current text with the board.

Three guideline books, one review board
The application comes first. Changes go to the board on its modification form with a fee: $250 for a fence or wall and $100 to $500 for a landscape change in 2026. Larger changes are heard on the second and fourth Wednesday, with the paperwork due by noon the Friday before.
Once approved, work has to start within 90 days of approval and finish within 180 days of starting. Which book applies to your street, the Community Association's, the Park Association's or the Town Association's, is the first thing we ask the board.
Fences have a short list of materials. The Community Association guidelines allow a side or rear fence up to six feet with the board's approval in advance, and a front picket fence or wall of 36 to 54 inches set a foot inside the front property line. Wood means smooth cedar, cypress, redwood or pressure-treated pine. Wrought iron is allowed. Vinyl and rough-cut lumber are not, and the finished side always faces out.
Daniel Island Park has rules for the lawn itself. There, about half of the pervious surface in a front yard has to be a lawn of warm-season grass: St. Augustine, Bermuda or Empire Zoysia.
Centipede is not permitted on golf course lots, and at least a third of the pervious surface in every yard has to be shrub and groundcover beds. In the Community Association's neighborhoods the rule is simpler: every unplanted area is sodded, with centipede preferred. None of the three books mentions artificial turf, so ask the board before buying any.
Driveways favor pavers. In the Park, a plain solid concrete driveway is not permitted. The guidelines favor pavers, colored or exposed-aggregate concrete, brick, or gravel with a paver border, with a concrete apron from the sidewalk to the street, and a pervious driveway still counts toward lot coverage. In the Community Association's neighborhoods a driveway is held to ten feet wide in the front setback.
Marsh and golf lots give up their back edge. The City's zoning text keeps a Visual Buffer Zone for twenty feet landward of the marsh critical line, with no impervious surface in it. On Park golf course lots nothing impervious goes in the rear thirty feet. Crews work Monday to Friday from 7 to 6 and Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30, never on Sunday.

What Daniel Island owners ask first.
Can I put up a vinyl fence on Daniel Island?
Not under the Community Association guidelines. They allow smooth cedar, cypress, redwood or pressure-treated pine, or wrought iron, and they name vinyl and rough-cut lumber as not allowed. The board approves the design before it is built.
Is artificial turf allowed on Daniel Island?
The three guideline books do not mention it. The Park's guidelines require about half the pervious front yard to be warm-season grass, which points the other way for front yards there. The board decides, so we ask it in writing before you spend money on turf.
How long does ARB approval take?
Larger changes are heard on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, and the application has to be in by noon the Friday before. Smaller ones are reviewed by staff. After approval you have 90 days to start, and 180 days from the start to finish.
